In a breathtaking display of corporate PR infused into local news coverage, Entercom has successfully been able to portray Rush Limbaugh’s move to a new Clear Channel-owned station as its own decision to cancel him.
But that’s a flat-out lie and everyone should know better. Clearly, local media outlets have allowed their dislike of Limbaugh to cloud good news judgment.
Lies! ALL LIES! Where is Frau when we need her?
Think about it this way: without the new station in town, which is owned by the parent company of Rush’s syndicator, Premiere Radio Networks, would WRKO willingly give up his show at any point during the next century? Of course not. This is a joke.
The Globies stand out with the worst coverage, claiming Limbaugh’s ratings are weak here. Did Entercom provide the paper with bona fide ratings data from the most recent reporting period (January 2010) to back up the assertion? Did the Globies independently confirm it?
Note the corporate spin here:
With Limbaugh leaving WRKO, the station will replace him with well-known Republican operative Charley Manning beginning Monday. “The Charley Manning Show’’ will air from noon to 3 weekdays on WRKO. Manning has served as an adviser to former Massachusetts governors William F. Weld and Mitt Romney.
“We think this is the best move for us,’’ said Jason Wolfe, New England vice president of AM programming at Entercom Communications Corp., which owns WRKO and WEEI. “Charley Manning brings top-notch insight and great credibility to us at a time when Boston politics are so intense and top of mind.’’
Obviously, we never expect honesty from The Globies on any subject, but using a well-known local advocate of liberal talk radio as some kind of an independent analyst on the subject of Rush Limbaugh is laughable:
“Charley Manning is very well connected locally,’’ said Donna Halper, a radio consultant and media professor at Lesley University. “He has a passion for politics. He has a tremendous amount of credibility. . . . There’s just so many stations that can air Rush Limbaugh.’’
Ask yourself why “conservative” Manning is praised by the left- what does that say about where his new show is headed?
Even funnier is the notion that a guy who briefly co-hosted a show 15 years ago is a threat to Limbaugh’s dominance.
And from the Patriot-Ledger, here’s another ominous sign on the Manning front:
Manning said he had heard “some complaints” that talk radio had focused too much on Scott Brown during his campaign for the U.S. Senate. He urged all campaigns to make their candidates available for talk shows.
“I’m just going to throw out the welcome mat to everyone,” he said.
Manning must know little about talk radio (and clearly doesn’t listen to Howie’s show) or he’d understand that stations are REQUIRED to invite all candidates. Coakley turned down repeated interview requests from Carr and many other area hosts.
Beyond that, talk radio’s demographic and Brown’s support base fit like a glove and the huge January ratings boost confirms that fact. Coakley appealed to the NPR / Globie crowd. Does he really not know the difference? Next time, Charley, think before you speak, if that is possible.
Ultimately, however, none of this changes the fact that WRKO is doomed without Rush. He’s been WRKO’s premium product for decades and provided Carr with a sizable lead-in audience. Manning will not.
Unfortunately, however, the new station appears slapped together and certainly won’t win these public PR battles until Clear Channel decides to get serious about creating a major market talk powerhouse. What we’ve seen so far is less than encouraging.
But Rush’s listeners will follow him anywhere and that won’t change no matter how inept the new operation might prove to be.

WXKS may or may not do well in ratings but it should do fine in billing. Clear Channel and its advertisers want clearance in Boston and they
will get it. Yes, it’s syndie but it’s the top 3 shows of its ilk in the country.
This won’t be like when CC launched 1200/1430 as progressive talk. First, it was progressive talk.
And to have it flop in Boston was sweet
schadenfreude. Second, the former 1200 signal
sucked. The new one sucks less. Well at least
within the 128 belt it will be solid by day, OK by night. They will have a local host for AM drive
and I don’t know whom it will be; I don’t
think RKO or TKK are shaking in their boots but they could lose some listeners.
Entercom paid a lot of money to run Rush and they got some good billing and ratings in return.
What’s RKO going to do now, rebrand as Howie 680?
Brian, you should try to get on the new Manning show and talk media. During the ad breaks you could give him some tips, having been in talk
radio yourself.
Maybe his “welcome to all” deal is trying to win more than just conservative listeners. Dan Rea on WBZ says “I don’t care what you think just so long as you’re thinking” and while he is conservative, he tries to welcome all in terms of
guests and listeners. (Though I switch the station when I hear Dan say, “Our guest this first hour is Barney Frank…” or something)
This is the Globe of course, so take it with a grain of salt. (And for laughs look up that 3/31/05 Mark Jurkowitz piece the Globe ran where Air America’s Jon Sinton predicted “in
5 years we’ll be on 600 stations” just like Rush)
One thing’s for sure, thanks to the new signal and hosts like Rush, Hannity, etc. they are sure to get more listeners than they did in ’04 with
Air America. But that’s a given.
I’ll bet Rush gets higher numbers than Manning.
Christ Almighty, I didn’t think that Entercom could get any more screwed up but, alas, I was wrong. Now Howie’s numbers will take a hit because he will have absolutely no lead-in audience. I love Coffee Boy’s spin job. I wonder what color the sky is on his planet.
Sorry to say it, but with this turn of events, there will be no saving WRKO. Stick a fork in them – they are done. After their numbers tank (as they certainly will), Entercom will toss the “management” under the bus and reformat the entire station. Won’t it be grand when the best show on WRKO is “Felon and Fineberg”? WOW!
You know, there ARE other options for talk shows beside some warmed-over local “political insider” no one is interested in listening to.
“In a breathtaking display of corporate PR infused into local news coverage, Entercom has successfully been able to portray Rush Limbaugh’s move to a new Clear Channel-owned station as its own decision to cancel him.”
Brian: there is not one shred of evidence in your article to back-up that introduction.
In addition, if you disagree with the Globe’s assertion of Rush’s “weak” ratings in the Boston market, where’s your proof to the contrary?
Honesty? All lies, lies, lies?
What exactly is the LIE you’re ranting about?
swami: you may be right. I do like having the option of a local alternative though we’ll have to see if Manning’s voice is annoying or not (maybe if you listen to it long enough…).
Wonder if RKO should just become ESPN 680, with the non-sports show being Howie in pm drive
(and he does make the occasional quip about
UNC, as an alum) Though WEEI would have to prob run something else overnight…
In terms ov voice, diction and cadence, Charlie Manning is the AM version of Michelle McPhee, and he is only marginally intellectually superior as well.
… well-known Republican operative Charley Manning
Who?
I googled Charley Manning.
The first two mentions are for a baseball player who played for the DC Nationals for 1 season in 2008.
rush’s ratings were always SOLID with the 35-64 demo that WRKO explicitly covets. sales is told to go after advertisers who want that demo only. rush was by far the 2nd best choice on the station for advertisers.
WRKO has known about Rush leaving for months so they’ve smartly prepared this new story-line.
Like I said on a previous article though, its only a matter of time before this slot gets filled by paid programming because entercom will desperately need the dough.
Manning is a Massachusetts GOP strategist…..whatever than means. I tune in to him before I listen to anymore from Graham Crackers.
You know, Graham needs to get over the fact he was arrested last year. His ranting about Rachael Kaprilien is sooooooooo old. GET OVER IT. He has spent WHOLE shows targeting her. If that boob was arrested because of a state to state registry snafu, then BIG DEAL…..shit happens. LET IT GO.
And I made the big mistake of keeping my radio on and now tuned in the Ms. Jay. He is just such a pretentious asshole. Again, he’s insinuating that Obama’s health care bill includes illegal immigrants. IT DOESN’T! He just wants to further enrage people. And the mammogram issue. It is no longer an issue, but he continues to pull on people’s heartstrings.
God damn, I’m so pissed off listening to him. Disagree w/the health care bill? Fine. But don’t continue to spew un-truths (i.e., illegal immigrants). He’s another one. He CAN NOT get over anything having to do with illegal immigrants.
Why is Donna Halper always paraded out as a radio expert?
What exactly has she done in this century? Yes she had some success back a zillion years ago, yes she is a historian, but anyone can research and opine on a subject and be called a historian, even Doris Kearns Goodwin and she made stuff up to do it. So she is a professor at some close cover before striking college.
She has not a clue as to how radio works today IMHO, and the Globe should wake up and find someone who knows something about the current stare of radio to quote.
I will listen to Manning over Limbaugh. As conservative as I am I never liked Rush. Rush is all about Rush and that annoys the hell out of me.
Is there any chance that Michael Graham or Howie Carr could flip to the new radio station? That way the existing stations can save some money on expensive talent. The numbers aren’t sufficient to pay their freight.
Joe Perry, ain’t that the truth! I stopped listening to rush a long time ago, couldn’t stand the constant back patting and the “you know I don’t like to make this show about me” then goes right ahead and makes it about him! No one has an ego like him, not even obama!
A couple of years ago I tried to convey my opinion to Jason Wolfe about what listeners want. All I know about radio is I turn it on and listen to people talking and commercials. I tried to explain that if they have what people want people will listen, advertisers will advertise and everybody makes money. Pretty simple concept but I guess he can’t grasp it as he basically told me it was only my opinion and he knows better.
Fine with me. I’ll listen somewhere else.
Goodbye Kim Komando
Goodbye Moe
Goodbye Willie Cunningham
Goodbye Rush
Goodbye CtoC
and the list goes on.
Goodbye WRKO
Joe Perry: I was referring to guitarist Joe Perry of Aerosmith.
piratetoby: If you go to the Paul McCartney show, please let us know how his hair replacement system and feminizing cosmetic surgeries look in person. I’m not sure that attempting to perform “Hi, Hi, Hi” onstage when you’re in your 70s works artistically.
Rush stopped being entertaining about 8 years ago. His voice started getting too gravelly, and he stopped doing his musical updates(homeless, Barney Frank, etc.) that were funny.
He’s not funny anymore. He’s a bore, and his new trick of weaving live spot reads into his commentary bugs the living s*** out of me.
Regarding “But that’s a flat-out lie and everyone should know better:” What’s the difference between a lie and a “flat-out lie?” Did Dan “Hey I’m flat up against the break” Rea write this piece?
I just saw Sen. Therese Murray on TV praising the MA movie industry tax credit scam and she appears to have had surgery(ies) to look like Michael Jackson’s father, Joe.
“We’re very proud of ya, Senator Murray… That’s very nice!”
The Edward M. Kennedy Memorial Habit of McPhee pretending to be streetwise and cool by using the term “back story”instead of the terms “background, biography/bio, or story.”
Surely, Charlie Manning is not getting paid by RKO/Entercom… Is Charlie or someone he’s allied with paying to put this show on the air?
I assume many will quickly tire of his vocal affectations, which still sound like he’s auditioning for the part of an Upper East Side gay Jewish art gallery employee in a 70s Woody Allen movie.
Doc, ^^^^ what’s wrong w/the above vocal affectation? It sounds interesting……wonder how it will translate to radio?
NYP: Poor McCartney looks pitiful. I wince when I look at him. Here’s the thing: the tickets were a thoughtful response to my feeling blue. It could’ve been tix to the pathetic version of The Who and my enthusiasm would be the same. It’s the gesture- from a friend who cares about me and knows my love of The Beatles-that I love.
“Awful, just awful”
The reasons Boston’s newspaper of record quotes Donna Halper are the same reasons the Hubs picture paper quotes Brian Maloney. 1. He answers the phone when they call or they quickly call back after they hear the message the writer has left. And they will go on record. I worked as a spokesperson for a major elected official who was always in the newspaper and on TV becasue the reporters knew he always gave “good phone” i.e. He called back and always had a smart pithy quote they could use.
Despite a very unremarkable short tenure as a talk host and current employment that includes running a Rush Limbo fan site and semi-managing a blog, The Herald considers Brian an “industry expert.”
WRKO will never, for a variety of reasons, return to its glory days of the 80′s when they had Williams, Burns, Brudnoy and The Celtics were the towns sports kings. But we seem to forget that they did survive Limbo’s long trip to rehab and Howie’s extended period away from the station during his court case.
I will tune into Manning, I know him and like him and although we have very different political view points , I like to hear other positions and he is someone who provides it without name calling and hate speak. I would have prefered if the paired him with Michael Goldman who gave up a job on WBBR in NYC becasue radio just didn’t pay enough. Do you think someone like Maryann Marsh who makes 3 times what RKO could pay her is going to give up 4 hours of her earning time a day to do talk radio? The two newspaper people who should be paired with a conservative host are David Bernstein and Adam Reilly of the Phoenix. They are liberal but they know what they are talking about and Bernstein has a great voice.
WRKO faces the same problem that all major market stations face, there is no longer a good radio farm system. When I started in the business in the early 80′s I worked at WCAP and WTAG before taking a job at WBZ. The people who started with me at the same time came from WCCM, WDLW, WLLH and WGAN. Of those outlets that are left how many have news operations and run local programming as opposed to hours of syndication shows?
Donna Halper by the way helped Rush get established in the US by the way. The band, that is
She worked for a Cleveland station and was interested in Canadian bands; brought them to the attention of the program director and so on…
met her at a radio-fan cookout a few yrs back.
Brought up books like Bernie Goldberg’s “Bias”
and her reaction was “ah, Bernie, God love him, but he’s so wrong…” She’s a lib.
Halper was the one who broke the story, so to speak, about Air America 1200 Boston going off in Dec of 06 (she got talking to someone). She has written books about radio, including “women in radio” and was often on the old
“Let’s Talk About Radio” show (with Bob
Bittner) on WJIB (Scott Fybush, Dan Strassberg, and Joe Ross were, too, familiar names to
radio buffs around here)
You are correct again Raccoon. Halper was the music director at WMMR in Cleveland and helped add Rush to their play list. They included her in the liner notes on one of their first albums. She was also music director at several other staions including the old WCAS, Back in the 80′s she ran a successful consulting business and showed small and medium market stations how computers can schedule music and commercial placement. She holds a Phd in Mass Communications and is as much an expert on radio as anyone else I have seen quoted in the press.
She is a liberal and a bit of an oddball but she knows the market and how broadcasting works. she is someone who has actually worked at stations for a significant period of time rather than someone who failed at radio and now just blogs about what is wrong with the industry.
OT – RKO replayed yesterday’s Avi Nelson filling in for Howie – overnite last nite instead of Redeye Radio -
I listened to Coast to Coast on AM1200 last night and was annoyed that the local commercials and promos were in Spanish. When Rush starts it would be the ultimate insult to Rush if the commercials still ran in Spanish… Someone above compared Manning’s voice and cadence to McPhee’s. Nothing can compare to McPhee’s on air personality. She had a guest on last night who had to repeat “let me finish my answer” as she rudely talked over him constantly.
Doc-Charlie Manning sounds like Laura Ingrham.
Politics aside, both voices are intolerable to my
ears for more than 10 seconds.
We have not and will not ever save RKO.
How about we try to save the almost extinct white
elephant?
therealbarbara: ah, so the Complete Schedule page was wrong, or someone messed up
PSAs/etc in Spanish on 1200? could be that it was just firing up PSAs, etc from the computer. When they started running C2C I noticed the TOH breaks were all PSAs, and all were in English
plus 1 or 2 times a message saying “Boston’s new home for Coast to Coast”. The other day I tuned to 1200 out of curiosity and they had an ad break
(this was in afternoon) and some were in English,
some in Spanish. One announcement seemed to say “Rumba”, “1430 AM”, and “Monday March 8″ in Spanish but I couldn’t figure out the rest. Thought it meant “Rumba moving to 1430″
but a woman fluent in Spanish on boston-radio-interest said they were saying that Rumba says goodbye and thanks and similar music (meaning music in Spanish? Mia not the same as Rumba really, other than that) would be on
1430 AM
Clear Channel hasn’t been forthcoming, as far as I know, as to what will be on 1430 AM but I’m pretty sure it will stay Spanish
There was a Rush tribute page (the band again) that mentioned Donna’s connection
Rush Radio Comp. Schedule page is up. Some TBAs. 6-9 am indeed a Rush “encore” weekdays. On weekends, reruns of Rush, Beck and Hannity…Sun nights are Handel on the Law and
Bill Cunningham
Hey RR, I made three appearances on “Let’s Talk About Radio”! Why did you leave me out and mention Joe Ross?
on that’s right, it’s been so long since it’s been on that I forgot how many diff people have been on! Duly noted
Why ‘RKO didn’t hire and put Avi Nelson on between 12-3 is a mystery to me. He is knowlegable and easy to listen to. I agree with 1st Time Caller and someone else said the same thing, her voice is like fingernails on a blackboard. She is easy on the eyes, but My God, the voice!!!!!!!!!!!!
Beck, Hannity, Levin and Cunningham are all heavy weights in conservative talk radio, manynot being heard in the Boston market before. Their lineup should do reasonably well for them. The wild card is the morning drive slot. I’d love to see CC buy out Howie’s contract and put him on……then RKO would have no choice to switch format and go all Spanish!
My problem with Ingraham is that it seems like there’s more ad time than show time.
Bumper music, a few sentences from Laura, 5 minutes of ads, bumper music, the announcer saying “call Laura now”, 5 more minutes of ads, another couple of sentences from Laura announcing what’s coming after the break, 5 more minutes of ads, Repeat.
Even though I agree with most of what Ingraham claims are her positions, I must say comment #34 is right on… I’d ad that, like the girdle wearer who lies about his height (O’Reilly with his fu_king coffee mugs and baseball caps,) Ingraham’s always selling some schlock merchandise like fu_king “Freedom Czar” shirts, etc. I need to buy her sh_tty branded merchandise in order to be an independent thinker?
Today she had on that gay sounding regular named Arroyo who was all gooey about some Roman Catholic memories of his. It was worse than listening to Dan Rea talk about his dog dying or Steve Leveille talking about his cat getting the long part of his fur trimmed.
Whether you like Ingraham or not, her show is one of the top in the country and she seems to do well on WRKO. It will be interesting to see her beat the over-the-top self-promoter Glenn Beck when he goes head to head with Ingraham starting next week.
Howie is already out the door.
Gone, baby gone.
AWOL from RKO for days!
BULLETIN BULLETIN BULLETIN BULLETIN BULLETIN
Howie Carr will be at WTKK by May 1 from 2-6
Jay Severin moved 6-10
The Screech-Walker aka Michelle McPhee 10-12Mid
Signed, sealed and delivered at Greater Media Hqtrs in Braintree yesterday between Howie Carr and Peter Smyth head honcho of Greater Media, Inc.
Can you say W R K O in Spanish……?
Well, some Catholics may enjoy hearing Laura and Raymond talk about the funny but stern Mother
Angelica… but agreed on how well she’s doing, as is Beck
WOW! Howie has defected, good for him.
seriously where is howie?
Finally, Jerry can RIP.
I am NOT a lawyer, but for Howie to go to WTKK, then he will have to buy out his contract for the 2-3 years left on his contract to Entercmom, am I correct? Will Entercom accept that and does Howie, the Silas Marner that he is, have all that scratch????????
WHOA……..Howie is gone from RKO? This is HUGE if true! I hope this is not a repeat of a couple of years ago when RKO wouldn’t let him go due to contract issues.
OT – RKO did air Red Eye radio overnite last nite AND I heard a promo for a new gardening show from 6-8am Sunday which means Paul Parent is out…again….hmmmm, I wonder if Whitley had anything to do with this move?? I heard years ago there were issues between whitley and parent.
If howie is gone, will sandy be far behind?
I want Howie to leave as much as anybody but please, not even close to any proof this is the case.
Also, Laura Ingraham’s show does horrible in the ratings on WRKO…worse than Reese!
Nathan regrets that he has but one rumor to spread for his internet.
What is the excuse for howie not being on the air the last 3 days?
hiding – I did not listen to all of Howie’s show on Tuesday so I don’t know if he stated why he was taking these three days off. I do know that Avi announced on his saturday show last week that he would be sitting in for Howie this week. Howie always talks about doing the morning shift on another station – he’s been talking like that since his contract debacle a few years ago.
I have searched around the internet and can’t find anything that substantiates nathan’s post above.
BTW Sandy’s real name is Nancy Shack.
Perhaps, WRKO will bring back “The Best of Jerry Williams” – better than Carr on his worst day.
Where is Grace Queen of The Cockomamies when you need him …er…him.
nathan, I think most of us who listen to howie are aware of sandy’s real name! Would you provide a link to the story you broke above regarding howie moving to tkk in may.
I think Nathan was prob joking
One rumor had Rumba changing formats, perhaps to best-of-Rush stunting, at 3 pm today. Mario Gonzales posted to boston-radio-interest:
“I was listening to Rumba 1200 this morning. The DJ (John Moussa) said
that the station was going to stop the Rumba format as of 3pm today.
This was previously reported. He then said that listeners could find
the same kind of music online at rumba100.com. This is one of their
other rumba stations. They are still running the ad where they say that they will convert over
on Monday and they urge their listeners to go to Mia 1430. They are
calling it Latin Pop music.”
Avi or Sandy did say something about Howie being in Florida–again? wasn’t he just there? Who knows, maybe he’s setting up The Southern Command and can broadcast from there just like Rush.
You have to be a fly on the wall at the Braintree Office Park for the source…..
alrighty then so this howie moving thing is probably just a rumor to amuse people on a Friday. If you can’t provide a link or a source then I would have to say your credibility just tanked.
Got an inside tip on new morning show on WXKS. Remember…Marjorie Claprood?
Would it be the same flies on the wall that thought Greater Media were getting the Red Sox?
No, maybe they are the flies that are flying around all those Howie Carr chocolate bars Greater Media bought before they learned that Howie and his legal team are a bunch of dolts.
Sorry Nathan, the only way Howie gets out now is if WRKO changes format, which I suppose could happen, but I’d be surprised if it happened soon.
If you check my posts in the archive (not that anyone with a life should bother), you’ll find that I’m generally right about these things.
Nooooooo, not claprood, not sure whose voice is more annoying, claprood, ingraham or mcphee.
Howie gave away all the bars. He did get a WTKK hat which he has worn to book signings…
Real Barbara. My bet is on Claprood’s voice making a train take a dirt road! I wish I could take full credit for that saying, but unfortunately I can’t.

Michelle McPhee definitely wins the “SCREECH WALKER AWARD for the most annoying radio voice in the history of all radio next to Woo-Woo…
BREAKING NEWS: Bob Grant will broadcast his show on MIKE 93.7 FM from his New Jersey home starting June 1.
You mean reports of Bob Grant’s death were greatly exaggerated?
Can’t wait for the Dean’s comeback.
Charlie Manning – mean street of New York???????
Try the mean street of Milton – the wayside to the Irish Riveria – Scituate.
You mean you can’t tell by his horendous Irish Boston AK Sent?
Nathan: WHAT are you spying on? And WHO are you spying for?
I can not understand why Avi (Dorian Gray) Nelson was not put in to replace Rushbo the Whale? I can listen to Nelson. I like Nelson. In fact, I’d make a point to tune in to Nelson.
Anyway, screw WRKO- I’ve got my own problems…
What can take one’s mind off a broken water pipe?, Enormous holes with chunks of plaster hanging by a thread, exposing the planks holding the whole damn ceiling up over my beautiful dining room. The skeleton of my house, which was never meant to be seen by human eyes- ever. And why? Because my idiot tenant turned the radiator off, not lowering the steam valve as he was told, and the pipe froze.
I am so anrgy, I could strangle him! Now…..
…speaking for myself, there’s not many distractions can trump that god-awful mess. But trust me, I found one. Details later.
raccoonradio, maybe Beck can help ease the transition by singing Babalu on Monday morning.
Spackle: true but from what I hear, the format launches at noon Mon with Rush and Beck won’t be on till Tuesday (and yes, that is a band name)
I have noticed RKO’s signal can really suck with power line interference, and not just on smaller roads with noticeable power lines. Try it around Centennial Dr. exit on 128. Horrible! Not as bad if you’re closer to Burlington though
>>I like Nelson
Thanks! Oops, you mean Avi! (my real last name is… well, I guess we are brothers from
another mother)
Andelman would pronounce the calls of one station he was on as “Dabba you aytch dee aytch”
Q: Why will Howie be walking into the WRKO building slowly on Monday?
A: Hey, no Rush…
Sen Brown and Cadillac Deval Patrick will be on
Manning’s show Mon acc. to WRKO facebook.
Marjorie Clapprood?? What, Pat Whitley wasn’t available? Or Jimmy Myers?
Howie’s handmaiden at the Herald made it appear in her article that WRKO was going local with Manning and letting the Limbaugh show go. Another example of lazy journalism in Boston. XKS is now on the air with promos calling itself “Rush Radio”. It seem to me that this switch has been in the works for sometime. Jess just seemed to miss the other half of the story.
She did say that Clear Channel grabbed the show from them in some articles, perhaps that one, but the headline made it seem otherwise. Being nice to Jason Wolfe/RKO…?
Congrats to Howie if its true. What will this mean for WCRN? Will they still be able to carry Howie?
Give ‘em hell Capn’
Interesting theory Rac, but I’m not sure it holds up. It seems obvious that Jess’ first loyalty is to Howie, not WRKO. Why wouldn’t she write something that makes them look bad? She’s never displayed a liking for WRKO or Jason before. Could she be getting some sort of quid pro quo down the road? Could CC already have said “Thanks, but no thanks” to Howie’s overtures for the future? Not likely that they would, or that Howie would go down that road prematurely again, but who knows? Of course laziness is always a possibility, dogged persistence and regard for the facts are both qualities Jessica has yet to exhibit. I don’t have any definitive answers other than to say that right or wrong, Rush was never valued at WRKO to the same extent that the local shows are. The numbers are good relative to other WRKO shows, but not as good as Rush in other markets. They have wanted to dump it for local for many years, but corporate probably did not want to sour the Premiere relationship they share in other markets/for other shows. If all of the above is true, it could have cut one of two ways: 1) CC put a renewal price on Rush that was so high that ETM chose not to do the deal (possible, since biz etiquette generally gives the incumbent a shot at renewal, even if the option is at an insane price). 2) ETM saw the writing on the wall and chose not to renew the show some time back, thus setting the stage for “Rush Radio”. I know nothing specific, but scenario 1 seems plausible to me.
Herald has article today promoting, er, talking about the new Manning show. Scott Brown will be a guest, as will Deval (in case of latter, thousands of dials spin to 1200…)
Getting 1200 on was a Rush job so to speak as the debut was scheduled for 4/1. No announcement of morning host yet. I thought I read that the Premiere/RKO contract was to have Rush through 2012 but yes, they may have said “you can keep Rush” but at a much higher rate and they balked. As you say
>>CC put a renewal price on Rush that was so high that ETM chose not to do the deal
And yes maybe ETM corporate chose to keep Rush so they could keep other shows (well,
there was Coast to Coast, and they did best of Beck on weekends, the Sun night show, etc.) btw I wonder if Fox News, also synd by Premiere, will still run on 680 after today? Maybe CC said “no hard feelings, you can still run that” but what will CC have at the TOH for news? (Allegedly they said they would have “some local talk and news”…)
I wonder if Metro/Shadow will also contract news on 1200, not just RKO…there was a time when they did not just RKO but 1150 as well…
Ok, so I used to like to listen to Beck on Saturday nites on RKO, then they took him away and replaced him with three hours of Rusty Humphries. I was just starting to get used to hearing him and whamo, I turn the radio on Sat nite to tune into Humprhies and what do I hear?? A plastic surgeon wanting to change my life. Are ya freakin’ kiddin’? I checked the schedule to see that said doctor was on for two hours sat afternoon and again on Sat nite? – I just checked the schedule again today and much to my horror they have cut two hours of Rusty Humphries and replaced it with two hours of plastic surgery talk, this same doc has a program earlier in the day for an hour. So we’ve gone from 3 live hours of rusty to two probably canned hours of plastic surgery talk, yeah that’ll draw tons of listeners, just when you thought RKO couldn’t possible get any worse……it does.
Also I heard a promo overnite Sat nite saying Laura Ingraham at 10 followed by Charlie Manning at noon. HUH??? I only heard the ad once but it got me thinking, is the felon going to be on for four whole hours again and we lose one hour of Ingraham?
Next, I heard a little of the new gardening show RKO has on Sunday mornings replacing Paul Parent, couldn’t understand a word the guy was saying and there were some callers who obviously couldn’t understand the guy as well. Nice going RKO, great way to continue losing listeners.
Rant continues…..I also heard several promos over the weekend for listen to rush at noon followed by Howie Carr at three………
This morning’s “wall street journal this morning” program was the same show they played all weekend, it was the “wall street journal this weekend” program, seriously, how screwed up is RKO?
RKO is known for airing outdated promos, etc.; how about “the Boston Red Sox are on WRKO”? At this point only certain games may be on, when there’s a conflict (as far as I know, WEEI has most games, and has since July or Aug of last yr) And one promo had said that RKO was the ONLY home for Red Sox baseball
(in the case of the former you could say, yeah, once in a very blue moon they’d be on…)
As for Laura at 10? Nope, it’s 9:50 am and she is on WRKO. And the RKO sched says Laura is on 9-noon on both the main page and Complete Sched page. But who knows, maybe they’ll put the Felon on till 10 and Laura from then on, maybe starting next week or so? RKO
is adding some local and trying to paint XKS as mostly syndie..at this point it’s all syndie.
I heard the “red sox are here on RKO” promo just recently and stopped in my tracks. Do these people have a clue, who’s running the show over there – no need to answer I know a bunch of morons are running the place, everyday it’s a novelty with that station, one just never knows what kind of nonsense will be broadcast on RKO.
Should be interesting to see what charlie manning brings to the table. Is he a republican? If so, why is coupe de val doing his show today?
He’s claiming to have people from both sides on…besides, how many Republican office holders are there in MA? Even with Brown (on fed level)
not many. Trying to get a wide audience including moderates.
RushLimbaugh.com’s station list now lists WXKS 1200 as Boston station but they have the wrong frequency for WXTK on the Cape. They were 94.9 years ago but have been on 95.1 for quite some
time now.
I do know when RKO got rid of Reese Hopkins, Laura took his place as 10-noon. Soon after it switched to 9 am, but that could have been one of the older promos.
I was up late and heard Jon and Jeff. They did an infomercial with some smoke machine guy right in the middle of the show. Times are tough. I also can’t stand the Saturday morning “Hire it Done” thing.
The promo I heard said Laura at 10 and Charlie Manning at noon so it couldn’t have been an old one.
As for coupe de val, I’m just wondering if manning is supposed to be a repub how did he get deval to come on his show, there’s got to be a catch, maybe manning isn’t allowed to ask certain questions or touch on certain subjects. It’s rare that a dem shows up on a repub’s show.
oops–wow, that’s interesting, but again they did have Laura on before 10…at least today
Charley now talking to Cadillac Deval (*– reaches for wastebasket, preparing to heave)
LOL – deval sure does know how to make people sick doesn’t he! Who in their right mind would vote for this clown? Oh wait………..
Now for the big question – will Howie address the Rush exodus? Will we hear him say, “Entercom happens” or “Someday, I will work in a real radio station again”?
It will be interesting to see if he will abide by any gag order placed upon him by the “management”.
He has savaged the Felon on a regular basis – I wonder if the loss of Rush will bring out the knoves from Howie. If he says nothing at all about it, then one must assume that he has been sternly warned / threatened.
Come on, Howie, let it rip!
That should be “bring out the knives”. Sorry, I’m so excited I can hardly type!
It is pretty sad that the Empress and the Coffee Boy are such bad managers that I listen to their station just to hear them catch hell. That is a real strange way to raise the ratings, but I guess it works for them.
The funniest thing about the coverage on the Rush-station-switch is WRKO’s suggestion (and the local media’s not questioning..) that Rush supposedly had poor ratings in Boston for some time. OK, if that was true, THEN WHY WAS HE KEPT ON WRKO FOR ~15 YEARS?!?! Wouldn’t that have been Einstein’s definition of insanity?!?
Howie alluded to DiMasi or some other politician recently and said “maybe they’ll get hired by this station for an early afternoon slot that may be opening up soon…”
Maybe he’ll repeat my joke and personalize it: “I took my time walking into the building today…hey, no Rush…”
Just listening to..uh… Manning..uh..show for the..uh..last 3 minutes..uh.. DROVE ME NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well, well, well. As an old fan of Jerry Williams I am very pleased to see RKO withering away and blowing in the wind. The line-up has sucked for YEARSSSSS…and I for one am sick of the solid right wing propaganda fest, where each host has the exact same views of all the others.
Here’s a novel programming idea for RKO – how about someone with a completely different point of view? Someone who might be….liberal….or progressive….or have a brain as well as a pulse? I would recommend Thom Hartmann, who is a genius as well as having a great radio voice. It would be great to have some diversity of opinion on the air after all these years of One Note Johnny’s.
Charley Manning? Glad to hear he survived embalming.
A caller just referenced the Rep. Massa situation and Howie’s response was, “I guess I know what show you were listening to this afternoon.”
For Howie, working at WRKO has to be like attending your own funeral.
Howie: “What can I say, they (CC) took (Rush) off to put it on their own station” and implied nothing can be done. Some on RKO’s facebook are saying Bring Rush Back.
Not much RKO can do unless 1200 dies a quick ratings death and CC offers it back to them…
Hartmann is on WWZN which gets nothing for ratings (maybe they don’t subscribe). Some lib views are on the powerful WGBH and WBUR.
If you like the dynamic Hartmann you should enjoy the thrilling Emily Rooney
Reports of Charlie Manning being alive are grossly exaggerated.
Welcome to WDEAD – DEAD No Pulse Radio, aka,
WRKO.
In lieu of flowers the body can be viewed at Waterman’s Friday from 2-6.
Burial at sea where WRKO has been for years adrift in flotsum and jetsum.
It now sleeps with the fishes
