Yes, those old rumors are back once again after a long hiatus. When will Clear Channel finally create its own news-talk outlet for the Hub? The bigger question is why this didn’t occur years ago.
Without question, a CC-owned-and-operated news-talker in our area would instantly have a major impact on the broadcast landscape.
There are a few reasons to believe the buzz this time, but unanswered questions as well. Let’s examine the situation:
— Clear Channel has a major problem: two of its biggest syndicated programs, the Sean Hannity Show and Glenn Beck Program are not currently carried on a major station in the tenth-largest radio market. In addition, the highly successful Mark Levin Show (overseen by bankrupt Citadel, at least for now) is also up for grabs here. For purposes of national advertising rates, this is a big hole that should have been plugged long ago.
— Nationwide, the company is stealing Rush Limbaugh away from stations it doesn’t own, such as what occurred in Providence when it was moved from its longtime home at WPRO-AM and handed to CC’s WHJJ-AM.
— With its recent format switch in Raleigh, CC’s made it clear it will bring the “Rush Radio” format to additional cities (same thing there, his longtime, non-CC station lost the program).
— Clear Channel’s shaky finances seem slightly more stable at the moment, freeing it up to once again focus on programming.
— But where would it go? It’s hard to believe the company would move Rush to another AM station. Clearly, an FM outlet is needed.
— Unless Rush’s WRKO contract is up soon or contains a loophole, none of this is in the cards.
The bottom line: Clear Channel needs its top programs to air in every major market, making the current situation unacceptable.

If this happened it would speed up the slow death of WTKK. Let’s hope it does. The few minutes that I listened to of Michelle McFake tonight was pure torture. She was taking calls on the hot subject of trying to come up with catch phrase nicknames for the Nigerian Terrorist who tried to blow up the plane over Detroit. It sounded like a bunch of 7th graders sitting at a table in the lunchroom trying to make up a silly name for a hated teacher. And she was the pretend “tough girl” leading the pack. Her show truly is bad and boring radio.
Not necessarily FM; they have 1200 with a tower in Newton and 50,000 watts. Signal not as good as RKO but not bad. The want ad in question said “1200″ and “WXKS” (actually 1200 is WKOX) but it leads one to believe the effort could be put forth for cons. talk at 1200 (pretty good by day). Lineup could be Beck, Rush, Hannity, Levin, maybe Dr Laura or Dennis Miller in there, perhaps Bohannon or Coast to Coast
What does Clear Channel have for FMs in Boston?
107.9 WXKS. Switch Kiss to talk? I’d think they’re getting good ratings/billing with music
94.5 WJMN Jam’n…to talk? Who knows.
(The AMs are WKOX 1200, WXKS 1430)
Here is the
ad
>>Job Title: Account Executive – WXKS AM
Job Description: • Identify opportunities to put the advertising and promotional power of WXKS – AM 1200 AM to work for local businesses. •
Radio experience with a specialty in New-Talk a plus.
Unless they maybe want to blow up Jam’n or Kiss, I would think AM…unless they can suddenly buy an available FM in town. But again… “1200″. Right there in the ad.
Brian, I truly, truly tried to get thru this thread also
without vomiting. Did not make it thru either.
Premiere also distributes four shows that are prod by Fox News Radio: Brian and the Judge (late
morning), John Gibson (midday), Tom Sullivan
(late afternoon) and Alan Colmes (10P-1A).
The CC talker, if launched, could carry some of those…
I couldn’t get thru this thread either. Yes, I did read it, but no, I didn’t get it.
Let me just say Rush is right where he’s supposed to be….on AM. I don’t think my radios even pick up AM. I haven’t tried in over 40 years.
>>I don’t think my radios even pick up AM
Then why, please tell us, are you on a blog called “Save WRKO”..?
raccoon…..why am I on this blog? Simple, I thought the “Save WRKO” was tounge in cheek? NO?
I read nothing here about saving WRKO. It’s not a joke?
Ha; no comment there, but I just thought it funny you said you haven’t tried to pick up AM in yrs but are on a blog dedicated to saving an AM station…
one that was launched after the hiring of
Mr Finneran, I believe. Actually getting rid of Finneran could help save RKO, yes…
It’s a done deal in the next few weeks that CC will be flipping their newly upgraded Boston AM to talk.
And as a point of reference, WPRO dumped Rush to go all local, not the other way around.
Herald says it will happen in Apr–WXKS 1200. And they hope to eventually get Rush
