Producer Turns Rival?

*** ALSO: WTKK website issues? ***

How strange to see FOX 25 morning oddity Doug “VB” Goudie filling in for WTKK’s Vay Cay Jay. Isn’t he part of Howie’s entourage?

Now, he’s competing against Carr, at least temporarily. With Vay Cay generally gone more than he’s around, could this become a habit?

From FOX 25:

BOSTON (myfoxboston) – Protesters gathered in Boston and across the country Wednesday to protest higher taxes and the actions of big government.

But a day later the question is, will the movement gain momentum?

Conservatives, libertarians and others disenchanted with government flocked to the airwaves of 96.9 WTKK on Thursday, where FOX25′s VB Goudie was guest hosting and taking calls.

He heard from working-class New Englanders who say they are suffering through taxation and big government spending.

Protesters pointed out the original tea party protest in Boston started small and, in the end, created a revolution.

  1. In media circles, ‘Guest-hosting’ is a euphemism for ‘I’m a media hack and I’ll take every dollar from every Grandma I can rob; I have no scruples. I’m a media hack. If there’s a dollar sign attached to it, I’ll do it.”

  2. Jay – like Michael Savage – is an example of someone whose politics are similar to mine, but I can barely stand to hear his voice.

Severin is a self-important braggart on a galactic scale. His continuous bragging about being God’s gift to women convinces me that he’s compensating for something – like maybe even being gay, not withstanding his wife and kids.

Endless repeating of the same point (stated umpteen slightly different ways) is one of the single most annoying habits in a talk host.

Oh for the days of Gene Burns, David Brudnoy and Gerry Williams…

  3. I hope VB goes far. He’s talented and has certainly paid his dues. As much as I like Howie, he has peaked and is just holding his own. My guess is he just wants a few more years of big paychecks and then he can retire to FL. People like VB are where talk radio is going.

  4. Cricket,

I could be wrong, but Jay-B wasn’t asking a question, he was making a statement.

Brian mentions Doug’s name in his first sentence. Didn’t you read it?

  5. Brian, not only is this not the first time, but since the Fat Bastard™ was legally bound by his contract to stay at the Big 68 he’s been mentally at 96.9–reportedly sometimes wearing a TKK button while on the air at RKO.

    Where’s Giles?

  6. pirate…that was me being a wise guy because yes, it was in the first sentence….(-;

How does Howie get away with bad mouthing his station all of the time? I do like when he rants about the morning guy though.

  7. cricket, I suspect that rko does not give a

fiddlers —- what howie says or who he says

it about while on the air as long as they have

    his revenue share.

VB should have a show in this market. He has

talent and is well liked for his work and has

managed a low profile for a young guy. He has

a trusting quality and I think that young and

    old like his persona.

  8. Howie had a caller yesterday tell him how much she loved his show. He thanked her and said,

“Would you keep listening if I moved to another station?”

And of course there were times when he really wanted someone to play a nice sound effect but they didn’t have anyone to do it because Happy had been laid off, but of course 96.9 hired him so Howie told his listeners “Happy has gone to a better place.”

I had trouble w/ WTKK site yesterday too but I note now it says “new site coming soon”. At one point the site did come back up but only for a Listen Live link.

Howie has worn WTKK hats at remotes and even in the RKO studios…

  9. VB has a steady lucrative gig at Fox25 and would be INSANE to return to radio, except as a last resort if he left WFXT because of budget cuts. What he does at 25 is what he is best at IMHO, and I watch every morning.

Radio is where some of the TV folks get put out to pasture correct?

  10. VB used to have a PM radio show on RKO. If I remember correctly it was called something like “VB’s Snake Pit” It came on at 7:00PM after Howie. It didn’t appeal to me. But, I never like it when VB fills in for Howie either. VB is like Ed McMahon…..a good color guy but not ready for prime time. He needs to feed off someone else. That is why he is passable on FOX 25. Gene feeds him the openings and VB fills in the one liners.

I thought he was great when he was with Howie and Sandy.

  11. Business is business. Howie can’t complain, he started as the VB to Jerry Williams, before he took Jerry’s job. Totally off topic: is VB related to the Ms. Goudie from Petersham who was a Trustee at BC? Could make that “Man of the People” thing a bit tougher?

  12. VB was 10x better than Sandy, IMHO.

But, even then, he always sucked when he filled in for Howie. And he was worse when he had his own RKO show.

I just don’t get the whole VB appeal.

Still, he is better than Jimmy Severino III. Which says a lot about Jimmy.

  13. Charlie Pierce of the moribund Globe-Democrat razzes Jay about the Imus situation. He mentions Brian (“…a radio blogger named Brian Maloney assures me that ‘This is not a stunt.’ Gotcha.”)

    All Talk

“C’mon, Jay. Stand tall against them on the air. It’d be a damn sight more entertaining than listening to Michael Graham talk about the RMV.”

  14. VB’s show, The Pit, came on at 11 pm and then 10 pm, until midnight, IIRC.

VB was good as a Howie sidekick and was OK on his own too. Sort of a “guy next to you at the bar”

(I don’t think VB drinks though) type of guy,

    just gabbing about whatever.

  15. racoon, yeah, The Pit!

He was weak, though, very weak. A little VB, as they say, goes a LONG way. So that made him good as Howie’s occasional commenter, but bad when he had to carry a whole show on his rounded shoulders.

Sorry, Dougie. You seem to have found your niche and a nice gig on that Fox25 tv deal, though.
