Just how badly has Governor Deval Patrick’s public standing deteriorated? He’s now running five points behind a guy who’s facing a state ethics inquiry for allegedly rewarding his buddies with lucrative “consulting” payouts.
Deval’s bad news was delivered via a bombshell poll courtesy of WHDH-7 and Suffolk University and reported in today’s Boston Herald. It has Patrick securing only 30% of the vote, compared to 35% for newly-embattled state treasurer Tim Cahill:
Only 34 percent of those surveyed in the poll conducted for 7News by Suffolk University say the governor deserves re-election, while a stunning 47 percent say it is “time to elect someone else.”
Voters gave Patrick a 43 percent unfavorable rating and a 44 percent favorable rating. The rest are undecided.
Cahill, meanwhile, had only an 8 percent unfavorable rating and 40 percent favorable. One caveat: The poll was conducted before headlines this week that the treasurer faces an ethics probe over a Lottery contract.
Asked about Patrick’s job performance, 49 percent disapproved, 40 percent approved and 11 percent were undecided.
Cahill outpolled fellow Democrat Patrick in a general election match among Republicans and independents and among voters in all age groups except 18-35, and easily defeated him among male voters – yet 23 percent of voters surveyed said they have never heard of the treasurer.
“The wiseguys always say you can’t beat somebody with nobody,” said Andy Hiller, chief political reporter for 7News. “Now nobody has a name . . . and it’s Tim Cahill.”
Patrick’s dismal poll numbers come after battering in the press over his naming of a senator pal to a costly plum post, raises for sheriffs, addition of two pricey staffers to the Pike payroll, embarrassing comments by his transportation secretary and his own dismissal of the controversies as “trivial.”
Voters, the 7News poll shows, appear to have had it with Beacon Hill politics, with a whopping 72 percent calling for the state to add a recall vote for “underperforming” pols.
The chance to recall elected officials, common in other parts of the country, would do Massachusetts a world of good. But there’s another, even more potentially devastating approach voters could take if given the opportunity: the addition of “none of the above” to the ballot.
This has been in place in Nevada for over 30 years, with this option sometimes generating thousands of votes. Just two years ago, there was an attempt here in Massachusetts to provide the same option. Imagine having the ability to truly vote against unopposed candidates in our one-party state.
As for Patrick’s declining popularity, I believe Barack Obama is to blame: until the Dear Leader assumed power, Deval was wisely keeping a low profile and seeming to recover from his early missteps. Since January, however, the governor has seemed to adopt Obama’s arrogant “I won” attitude, greatly affecting his standing.
It’s more than the crazy tax-and-spend schemes, Deval’s approach and delivery is clearly a factor. His best re-election hope is now built around a competitive three-way race where the unenrolled candidate steals votes away from the Republican. First, he’ll have to secure the Democratic nomination, which now appears anything but assured.

“Since January, however, the governor has seemed to adopt Obama’s arrogant “I won” attitude, greatly affecting his standing”
You are correct. I continue to be amazed at the statements he makes when there is public outcry. He thinks “Yes we can” has become “Yes I can”. I can’t even listen to him on E&B, I have to turn the radio off.
I loved Deval and I have to admit that I was a huge (figuratively and literally) supporter of his.
I must admit, however, that I have had buyer’s remorse since early on and it continues to this day. As Emerson said: “A foolish constancy is the hobgoblin of little minds.”
I do not like Treasurer Tim, but Martha Coakley rings my bell. Kind of like Tom Reilly, but with a pair.
To a large degree, the people who supported Deval loved what he ‘represented’ and let that cloud their judgment over whether he could do the job. In point of fact, the governor of Massachusetts–no matter the Party affiliation–has a tough job simply because the state is so politically intertwined. People might think that a Democratic governor in a Democratic state has ‘got it easy.’ Indeed, Deval thought just that when his first orders of business were to buy new drapes and fawn over cushy Cadillacs. Now, you can’t find a picture of Deval that isn’t a scowl or a frown or a picture of utter irritation. Like Obama, Deval thought he’d be placed gently onto a highway with no one on it. No one going in his lane and most CERTAINLY no one coming the other way. Guess what? SURPRISE! Notice any similarities in the demeanor of Deval and The Dear One? Yes! They are both showing increased signs of irritation…of things not going as ‘adoringly’ as they childishly expected. That it took Deval a few years to reach this point while it’s taken The Dear One only a few months is very, very telling. If Obama is ‘irritated’ now, he ain’t seen nothing yet.
Patrick’s not worried at all.
He found Maid Marion a super hack job with no problem, he will have a sweet gig waiting for him elsewhere.
After he is done here, he will receive another hack job from his bastardized Liberal buddies.
Fire up the popcorn popper, this just keeps getting better and better. Who’s going to crash and burn first…….the fool governor or his clone in Washington………both of them must be traumatized by what’s happening to them…..and yes, the facial expressions are just priceless. The holier than thou attitude does not sit well with the public.
Do libs have the courage to replace a black with a white.
NOPE. Guess they’ll import another light skinned carpetbagger like they did with this Chicago ringworm.
Chicago sucks.
I don’t see what all of the above has to do with “saving WRKO” or talk radio in general, but I’ll add my dos centavos: this is the legacy of the smooth-talking fair-haired (not a hair out of place) boy, the Mittster! He didn’t care one whit about establishing an alternative party, HIS party. Instead, he became just as remote as any politician you can name, focusing instead on his doomed presidential campaign. The Rebublican party in Massachusetts is even more moribund than before Romney took office, the Democratic majority is more secure than ever so they don’t have to worry about opposition candidates except some possible primary opponents, and even after a string of Republican governors, the candidate of that party in the next election will be behind the eight-ball starting out…and here’s the best part: Romney is still involved in a presidential quest, but as long as he’s an adherent of his crazy cult, he’s toast, and if he switches to some equally-crazy but mainstream belief system, he’ll continue to be branded as a con artist with no abiding principles.
Might I interject a note of sanity, Larry (do you mind if I call you Larry?)?
The MA governor is basically a eunuch.
One party rule here means the Speakah and the Senate President run the state. They can override any veto, bills can languish in committee or (worse yet) in “study”, and the governor (elected by millions) has to sit idly by while crooks elected by 10,000 hold us hostage to their whim and their agenda.
Mitt did not create that. Nor did he even exacerbate it. It was there before his tenure, and it is there now. This is not necessarily bad if you are a progressive. It sucks if you are a moderate or a (yech) conservative.
“Romney is still involved in a presidential quest, but as long as he’s an adherent of his crazy cult, he’s toast”
I disagree, his religion was not the reason he had to drop out it was because this was McCain’s last shot that he was pressured. Romney should have been president, at least he is a business man who can make a tough decision. I hope he runs again, we really need a person who understands bunsiness.
Damn it! I’m having problems with this site freezing up on me while I’m typing a comment. Just lost my post……
Anyway, Lawrence, I agree with your assessment of the death of the GOP here, and it’s not a good thing. Not because the GOP is my P of choice, but because I recognize the need for some balance here. And I agree double with your assessment of Romney. How often did we see his pic in either newspaper during his term? Rarely. And the few times we did see him, it was a staged event (the tunnel disaster, remember?) HE WAS NEVER HERE. And I will always resent him for that. Being Governor was nothing more to him than a stepping stone, and he didn’t even care enough to make an appearance that he was governing.
And I agree with Softy as well. Patrick is unable to do anything. Dimasi chopped “it” off and handed it to Deval on day one. I’m disappointed recently, but recognize what he’s up against. I believe he is doing the best he can. It’s tough times right now and so many are just looking towards our elected leaders for HELP.
Deval’s ratings are down, that’s a fact. But what really bothers me is these lunatics who take pleasure in seeing our leaders struggle. Are they so dumb they don’t understand the implications of the failure they are rooting for? Are they that stupid? I’ve never witnessed so many who take such delight in Patrick’s (and Obama’s) recent media grilling.
I cannot help but think that part of this ill will towards them is racial, regardless of any protests to the contrary. There are people who really, really want to see both these men fail. Any thoughts?
“cannot help but think that part of this ill will towards them is racial, regardless of any protests to the contrary. There are people who really, really want to see both these men fail. Any thoughts?”
Wow, that’s a big leap. If it was racial they would not have been elected. I don’t want to see either one fail but I am damn sick of the talk of hope and change only to see more of the same. Romney did not hire hacks the way Patrick is.
Cricket,
I need clarification. Does “Wow, that’s a big leap” mean you disagree with my premise?
And, “If it was racial they would not have been elected” What “it”?
And why are people “hacks” if hired by Patrick? The people Romney hired are different from the people hired by Patrick? “Hack” is determined by which Governor hired them?
There are a lot of things Romney did not do. Govern the state is a good place to start.
“Hack” is always a by product of the Dems.,so
say the opposition.
The Republicans in this state have always
been a disaster with their people skills. The
talk and nasty inferences in regard to the
POTUS and in some degree as of late to the
Gov. are so out of place and sad in this year
and time.
I wonder if Obama is going to come to the deffense of his buddy, here ?
The bad news is Joe Kennedy leads the pack of hacks in the gubernatorial sweepstakes. If we have to suffer through another Democratic governor, I’ll stick with Deval.
ok, I did a bit of research. Pirateboy you are dreamy, Margery is long in the tooth and I am a homophobic bigot.
Now I know how to proceed.
All Deval needs to do is get a re-election website put together by the people who built Obama’s campaign website. He’ll win with a landslide victory if he gets his propaganda out loud enough. There’s lots of dumb people under 40 that think a fancy website is an indicator of qualifications and intelligence.
Not in the paragraph that I just cited.
Jay-Z,
C’mon! I disagree. Any person under 40 assumes a candidate would have their own website. The LACK of a website is a better indication of qualifications and intelligence. How qualified is any candidate who is too old to recognize and utilize the technology that keeps the world connected?
And Obama’s website was hardly fancy, yet extremely effective. The use of the web in his campaign can not be underestimated. I was not active in his campaign (although I did support him), but I have a few friends who were and I was really impressed with how they worked together.
Larry Glick, RIP.
Larry died? Didn’t hear that. He was the first guy that got me into local radio (and then later Norm Nathan). That was when radio was fun and open ended.
Stafer, you’ll have to wait until next week to read Brian’s “new” blog entry on Glick’s passing…
Meanwhile, Michele McFlea was saying last night that, due to the tragic murder of the 4 cops in Oakland, all cops should be allowed to make $200k per year doing unlimited police details. They have “earned” it, she said. Nice.
And did she explain why MA is the only state that still has unlimited police details and the rest of the states manage without?
I like Michelle and I appreciate her support for the men/women in uniform but she goes overboard on occasion.
RIP Larry Glick………
Maloney, Stafer, Pat Lucci,
Why does Margery sneeze and cough and blow kisses to Jim on air? I am obviously not “in the biz” but I thought talkmasters could mute or hit a cough button when on-air? Or do I hear this just because I listen on-line?
That is all. Thanks in advance.
“But what really bothers me is these lunatics who take pleasure in seeing our leaders struggle. Are they so dumb they don’t understand the implications of the failure they are rooting for?”
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I’m sure you took the same stance at the media who took extreme pleasure on making sure Bush failed.
Where was the support of the military in Iraq the last 6 years?
You refer to them as “Lunatics”…did you call CBS, NBC, ABC, NYT, “Lunatics for their calling for Bush to fail…
JLB,
“I’m sure you took the same stance at the media who took extreme pleasure on making sure Bush failed.”
No, you could not be more wrong. Did I like or support Bush? No. Did I goof on his speaking (or lack of) abilities? Absolutely. Did I take pleasure in making sure he failed? NO, I DIDN’T.
I think Bush was unequivocally the WORST President we have ever seen, hands down. However, regardless of what I thought of him, he was OUR President for eight years, and recognized that his failures affect all of us.
I do not have the luxury of biting my nose off to spite my face and even if I did, I still wouldn’t wish failure on any President
Softy,
Just be grateful kisses are the only blowing you hear from Magpie on the air ! Yes, my bad.
(Sorry, ADot. When it comes to the Magpie, all I can say is “The Devil made me do it”. Thx Flip)
Oh, no! Magpie used the word “buttocks” in the first 5 minutes of the show. What does that mean? Endless strings of “buttocks, but tocks…..” inserted randomly throughout the next 3 hours.
Unfortnately I need to toss my pirate togs and rush off to attend a meeting. I need a “buttocks” monitor to report back to me how many times Magpie used it. I’m still collecting data for my statistical analysis of “pizza ass” “buttocks” and “butt stuck in window”. The report will be comprehensive and I may make it available to anyone for a small fee.
“inserted randomly throughout the next three hours”. Very strange choice of words in a
sentence with 1000 buttock descriptions.
ADot,
LOL! Not really “strange”, but rather funny, now that I read it! And it was unintentional.
Where’s my data? Anyone? What did I miss?
Pirate,
Could it have been inserted??
ADot,
Stafer would be able to answer that question better than I can. But if the answer was yes, that mute button better be working, yes?
It is being reported that the Gov. went after Walsh to fill a job that has been vacant for 12 years.
I don’t have to want him to fail, he is doing a good job of it on his own.
A bit of my own research:
1. Piratetoby is dreamy
2. Margery is a bit long in the tooth
3. Cricket is (by her own admission) a homophob bigot, AND
4. Tracie is an asshat from Hanover
Now, proceed with caution.
aha!!!!
there you are Grace. I own you!
oops, I mean Patti from Plymouth
Well, Tracie, don’t get your gander up just yet. This is a blog for radio insiders. I am content to stay on the sidelines and enjoy the posts. Clearly you have no problem posting on the “biz” which will add to my delight immensely.
I’m sure you’ve read the guidelines for posting (no copy and pasting here) and there is no option for your wide ass grin emoction. OMG! Maybe, just maybe, you’ll have to form an original thought, or the basis for an opinion or debate.
With that, I’m happy to bid you adieux, back to my seat in my luxury box. The one thing that makes watching you from afar so much sweeter is you thinking you own me, yet never able to get me.
Oh, but before I sign off, two things: first, all that volunteering you do, but not for any extra “credit”, what was it again? Oh yeah, that one time you tried volunteering for Thanksgiving but claimed they didn’t need any more volunteers? And the Imus thing? Posting you didn’t introduce yourself to Jim and Margery for fear of looking like a “groupie” like me? Sad, sad excuse. And finally, using “adorable” as an adjective to describe Margery? Adorable is appropriate for describing cute young kids and cute old people. Do everyone a favor, start using a thesaurus.
Now with a twitch of my nose, like Samantha in Bewitched, I’m gone.
Cricket? Grace (not Grace from TKK?)? Who the hell are these ladies?
Well, whoever and wherever you came from, don’t bring your cat fight here. We have plenty of drama queens as well as toads in residence. Don’t start using our sandbox as your kitty litter box.
Kindly take it outside.
No, not grace from TKK. Just a stalker from Plymouth. Sorry, I should have just ignored her. I will do so going forward.
Cricket,
I bet my stash of green stamps that it is
Grace queen of the cockamamies!
AD, Jerry would have had a field day! (-;
This looks like taunting to me. Again, I’d ask you to take it outside. OK? Let it GO.
Do not look for trouble where there ain’t any!
P.S. It is cold as hell outside and just a tad
spongy(similar to myself) so I am staying in.
yeah AD, quit starting trouble. Back to the Gov., do you think he will now have a better e-mail policy in his administration?
No. He is totally committed to twitter!
Aren’t you excited.
I have not tried to twitter yet…I am scared, not excited!
You can trust me little Cricket! Don’t be scared.
ok then, I will try it and get back to you.
