Even after years on the air, one of the toughest skills for a host to develop is the art of interacting with callers. Like baccarat in a Nevada casino, it’s the one game in the house with a completely unpredictable long term outcome.
While other components of a talk show can be rigidly controlled by a well-focused host, callers can within mere moments ruin the momentum, change the subject, violate FCC regulations or occasionally, make memorable contributions. When things go wrong, it’s up to you to quickly get the train back on track.
During WRKO’s Howie Carr Show last week, I was listening as a potentially suicidal woman was put live on the air during afternoon drive. From today’s Boston Herald:
The hardboiled WRKO radio host and Herald columnist tried to dissuade a female caller – distraught over the bleak economy – from killing herself, divulging that his own grandfather committed suicide during the Depression.
The caller, who identified herself as 54-year-old “Carol,” told Carr that she moved to Jonesport, Maine, three years ago, bought a $59,000 house and had been trying to get a job, without success.
In a stunning on-air admission, “Carol” revealed that she swallowed 100 pills in a suicide attempt last February when she was about to lose her home. Her daughter from Montana showed up “out the blue” and “saved my life,” according to an audiotape of the show.
Ever since, her two daughters have been paying her mortgage and other bills. “And now, they’re so strapped out from helping me that I am right back where I was last February and seriously contemplating suicide,” said “Carol.”
“Don’t kill yourself, Carol,” Carr said. “It’s always a bad mistake to kill yourself, Carol. I’m serious about that. Your family never recovers from a suicide.”
“Carol” became emotional during the 3 minute call, saying she was “burdening” her family.
Carr talked with her a bit longer before moving on to other callers. But his listeners wanted to stay on the subject, with several trying to pursuade Carol not to take her life.
Carr told listeners that he’s made jokes about it in the past but that his grandfather killed himself in 1931 during the Depression. “The family basically never recovered,” Carr said.
It turned out an agent with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency was listening to Carr’s show, and police were quickly dispatched to Carol’s home.
Reached yesterday, “Carol,” whose name the Herald is withholding, said she had called Carr’s show because “I feel like nobody’s listening to me.”
As the economy continues to tank, experts predict radio hosts could be fielding more calls from suicidal listeners.
And in today’s Herald column, Howie offers his personal take:
She told me she’d tried to kill herself last February by taking “100 pills” but that her daughter had found her. But now, she said, she was thinking about it again.
Now, this is not the kind of call I solicit. My job is to entertain you, not depress you. So when “Carol” mentioned suicide, my first response was to try to snap her out of it without appearing to be a callous brute, which is what I basically am. “Don’t kill yourself,” I said. “Sell those pills to the junkie and you can get some of her SSDI.”
But by then she was crying, so I had to try a different tack. I told her what a bad mistake it is to kill yourself. “Your family never recovers from a suicide,” I told her.
She said she didn’t want to be a burden on her two daughters.
“It’s a bigger burden to kill yourself, Carol,” I said, “because that way, they’ll always be asking, what could I have done?”
We went on for a while, and finally I had to cut her off. But other callers wanted to keep talking about Carol’s obvious despair over her financial plight, so I told them what I knew about suicide in times of economic turmoil.
In 1931, my maternal grandfather killed himself. He worked in the post office in Monroe, N.C. I’ve never really been clear about why he did it – a common theme, I’ve discovered – but one reason I’ve heard was the Depression. Supposedly he’d lost some money, but I don’t know for sure.
All I know is, my grandfather went down to the basement of the post office and blew his brains out, and that was basically the end of my mother’s family. The relatives urged my grandmother to put her five kids into an orphanage. She kept things together by giving piano lessons in return for food.
My initial reaction to Carol was a bit different: I thought of how WRKO budget cuts had gone much too far, leaving his lone remaining producer with too little time to adequately vet potential callers. That’s because I don’t recommend allowing suicidal or other deeply troubled individuals on the air.
Talk hosts aren’t grief counselors, they’re there to discuss news items. The public is invited to participate, but a certain amount of structure is necessary.
Think of it this way: what if Howie (or any other host) were to give bad advice, or take some other unproductive approach that results in the unthinkable? There are trained professionals who handle exactly this sort of situation for a living. His producer should direct distraught callers to crisis hotlines for help.
Sometimes, however, this type of call somehow does end up on the air and it’s up to the host to deal with it. Carr’s approach did add a human element and was thankfully effective. Clearly, his own family has never quite recovered from his grandfather’s suicide; his story forced Carol to think about those she would leave behind.
Nonetheless, talk radio is not the place for suicidal individuals, regardless of the economy or whatever else might be driving it.

This smells of shaleless self promotion by the sinking Herald of one of its crown jewels. I happened to hear that call and thought Howie was rather weak in his words to the woman. Also, there was something about the suicidal woman that made me think that she did not sound distraught. Howie is right about the after effects of suicide on the family. If the Herald used this story to examine the causes of suicide with expert sources, I would feel differently about the Herald’s (which means Howie’s) printing this story.
Is that a current pic of Howie?? Howie’s looking good in that picture, the eye surgery and the weight loss have taken years off his appearance. I heard the call with Carol and it was rather uncomfortable and scary hearing her talk of taking her life but Howie did a good job trying to deter her especially adding his personal story about his grandpa. You never know who’s listening and I’m glad someone from the Maine DEA was listening. If Howie had blown Carol off after only a couple of seconds who knows how this would have turned out.
I don’t argue that this woman’s call was not on the up-and-up (I did not hear it live), but remember Jerry Williams (whom I loved) and his series of scam callers, the most famous being the Vietnam guy. Here’s that story:
http://www.bostonphoenix.com/archives/1998/documents/00521526.htm
I guess my point is that no matter how poignant the caller seems, there is always the chance of canard. In this case, I’d rather her call be a ruse than to think that someone is actually going to off himself…
real barbara,
weight loss and eye surgery may have helped some, but when did his forehead grow? he needs a hair replacement sponsor so he can get that done free too.
if she was a real caller and not a scam, then wouldn’t the maine dea hsve some kind of report about this? listed in that report should be more details about how “real” carol was about doing that.
If this were the Felon or any Lib talk host it would be national news. But a heartless conservative BASTARD…bring on you conspiracy theories cause that’s all liberalism is a failed theory.
ANYBODY who has ever listened Howie knows hes a big cupcake who knows how to push buttons to entertain people. What he can’t hide is the slight change in his voice when he speaks of his daughters, wife and dear old Dad.
Julie will be calling in the felons show tomorrow unfortunately he can’t save her and she’s the only one who can’t see it:) Her career has been on suicide watch since she hired the Felon.
I agree with Larry. This pure exploitation by the Herald. These “suicidal” callers to radio stations..I’m not buying it. Dsperate attention seekers. They’re not suicidal,IMO. Taking one’s life can be REALLY EASY if you really want to do it. Her “100″ pills story. What type of pills? Probably a miniscule dose OTC brand. Taking 100 SSRI’s..now that’s serious.
I’ve met Howie a couple times and he’s a nice man. His reaction to the caller was what any of us would most likely do–try to talk them out of it as best he could. As for the Herald, well, yeah–and I had referred in jest to Jessica as “Howie’s secretary” during the whole WRKO/WTKK tussle
(maybe “Howie’s press agent” was more like it)
because any word about it from his camp conveniently got reported by her.
It’s tough to properly screen callers, because callers know the drill: They say they’ll talk about ‘X’ and end up talking about ‘Y.’ I don’t know how budget cuts at a station can be blamed. Howie is a sarcastic personality; that’s his M.O. Now if he dealt with this caller in a perceived ‘wrong way,’ a lawsuit could result if the caller went through with their ‘threat.’ Is there legal precedent anywhere for a talker who was charged successfully (i.e. found guilty) with ‘contributing’ to a suicide?
Caught 20 seconds of Finneran this morning before hitting the CD player button.
He was making a big deal about how he was a good person who would lower his salary to save fellow workers their jobs.
Bwaaaaaaahahaha! Tommy singlehandedly blew up almost every other job at the station with his bloated pay and crap ratings! Who does he think he’s fooling? It was probably the most obscene thing I ever heard on radio.
You bunch of cynical whiners!! Howie Carr showed more class and compassion yesterday than you could ever muster up. Instead, you spend your energy spewing your contempt. You suck!
Howie, you’re the King.
Bob,
You are fanboy fruit. YOU suck.
good come back James Puberty

Wow…another brilliant retort “Vernon”. You hick.
Again…you make my point.

Bob,
Anybody who calls another man “king” is a wretched moron, a pea-brained imbecile,an idol-worshipping simpleton, sycophantic peon.
I’d just like to know at which point the dollar figures compose a tragedy or where they indicate comedy.
I heard this call and it sounded like a typical simpering New England half-wit with a sense of entitlement engorged by years in an environment that celebrates victimhood and discourages self-reliance. In other words it sound like a Democrat trying to score points by talking up doom and gloom. I didn’t believe it was a real call.
But if it had been “My mortgage is $98.00 a month and I can’t pay that in the United States of America”, wouldn’t it have taken a heart of stone not to laugh?
If it had been “My mortgage is $1875 a month and I can’t pay that in the United States of America”, would we be castigating Howie now for his callousness?
He did the best he could in a bad situation, he should never have gotten that call, but every once in a while one will get through.
Huberty…you AGAIN prove my point.
(That liberalism is going to rot what’s left of your brain! Either that, or you’re only 14 years old.)
Howie is now pimping this story yet again… let’s see where he goes with it. I am smelling more and more of Jerry Williams’ “Vietnam Vet” m.o. Jerry was Howie’s mentor, you may recall, before Howie pushed him out the door.
-CS
he played the call and claimed he didn’t shop the story around…said Jessica was going to write about it and also they (Herald) wanted Howie to
write a column too about it.
It is a backhanded insult:)
And I’m proud to be a HICK, but get it right conservative hick…
Howie – King
Obama – Messiah
I agree “a pea-brained imbecile, an idol-worshiping simpleton,sycophantic peon.”
Circlet,
I’m glad to see somebody else is applying critical thinking here. But we’re “cynics”..
Bob,Vernon etc…
You FRAUDS and Howie ARE NOT CONSERVATIVE. True conservatives are men like Ron Paul…THE GUY that you neo-con phonies despise. Registered Democrat Howie Carr is a radio conservative…
I’m a small government guy…but now I’d love to see the Fairness Doctrine brought back to annoy the sheep who listen to Rush,Howie,Hannity…
Howie says Baaah! Vernon and Bob say Baaah!
The fairness doctrine will only require the broadcasting of unlikeable radio time. You can’t mandate listening. Rush, Howie, and Hannity will continue to rule.
I for one am not worried about a fairness doctrine, unless we have to pay for it out of tax dollars. That is a real possibility based on historical lack of success.
James keep your desire for sheep to yourself…
” I thought of how WRKO budget cuts had gone much too far, leaving his lone remaining producer with too little time to adequately vet potential callers.”
Hey Brian, maybe you should be praising WRKO for saving this woman’s life. Who knows what she would have done if an experienced call screener had kept her from Howie. Give credit where credit is due!
I don’t listen to that blowhard, however based on the admittedly limited knowledge I have on these types of callers, I dare say this was a cry for help, at best. If it was a hoax, or even it wasn’t, using it as a vehicle for self-promotion is troubling, to say the least.
I’ve read about the “Vet?” calling into Jerry Williams. It’s a great little story, and not so much for the “did he?/didn’t he?” controversy, but for shedding light on anti-war activists, and the guerrilla theater tactics used. They were very effective
Ask Gump Severin. I’m sure during his close personal relationship with Abbie Hoffman, the theory of guerrilla theater was a topic if discussion. Hey, I just remember seeing a picture of a tiny person, face painted, beret in place… could that have been Jay? No wait; it was one of Abbie’s kids.
Sorry.
OK…clarification time. The Howie=King comparison made by me needs to be explained to the cynical, whiney, liberal moonbats that seem to have found a new home on this page.
When I referred to Howie being the King, perhaps I should’ve included “of Boston Talk Radio”.
The numbers don’t lie. And the call wasn’t phony, even though you wish it was.
One last comment….Howie should shove his stubby digits into his overpaid pockets and come up with a little scratch for “Carol”, as well as the Herald for exploiting this woman’s story.
He said or did nothing out of the ordinary. What a shameful opportunist.
This whole think stinks. Stinks, I tell you!!
Howie’s devotees,
You say “cynical”, I say critical thinking.
“Liberal Moonbats”..you mindless Howie The Yuppie Carr love throwing this weak, nebulous term around. I understand liberal..but OTHER THAN HOWIE SAYING IT, why do you little parrots say it? What’s it mean? It’s not clever or funny.
Go get a facial at a day spa with your Yuppie overlord. Howie LIVES LIKE THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE,YOU FOOLS!
100% agree with piratetoby. The story is a total ‘plant’. Heslam has done a few of them for Howie over the past few years but this is most glaring effort to date. Read the commens on the Herald site. 90% are negative towards Howie. Can’t BS a BSer, Jess. Wonder where she got her journalism degree. Must’ve ordered one thru one of those spam e-mails.
These are hard times for the media so this is their way of trying to be creative in selling/pushing sto..err…press releases.
Bob,
Thanks for your “King” classification. What a relief to know “your Highness” applies to Howie and Boston’s talk radio only, while “Captain” applies to his Highnesses’ written word, correct?
And for you to know that “Carol’s” call wasn’t phony, that makes you who? The royal soothsayer? Nah, more like the court jester.
I’ll give you this, plant a crown on his dome and he’d look like a short, stout, rounded, over-stuffed, puffed-up king with a boyish face, so popular in kid’s books.
“It’s tough to properly screen callers, because callers know the drill: They say they’ll talk about ‘X’ and end up talking about ‘Y.’ I don’t know how budget cuts at a station can be blamed”
For the Saturday morning producer shift on WRKO–last I heard–due to Job Cuts, there is no call screener, just the producer. Does Howie have a person who is just a screener?
I have to screen as I produce, and it’s hard–(whine whine)– how can you talk on the phone while you’re monitoring what’s going out over the air? If that’s what’s going on at WRKO, cutting staff to save money (Look at Happy, at WTKK now!) then that’s why she got through and that’s what it has to do with budget cuts being to blame.
Hey, Pirate-boy…
I know one of the EMTs that went to Carol’s house.
The call was real.
YOU are a moonbat! (I use the term proudly. Only a genuine moonbat would be confused by its meaning)
Honest to God I have tried but—Huh???
Hey, Bob? So you know one of the EMT’s? What does that mean? Was her stomach pumped? Purged of what, Tylenol? The fact that EMTs went to her home proves nothing, except this caller was indeed a woman. No one knows if “Carol” was intent on killing herself, except Carol. Now speaking from personal experience (one of my parents committed suicide a few years ago), when someone is intent on checking out, they don’t talk about it. They keep it to themselves and then do it. Of course, there are always expectations. Anyone who believes that Howie Carr was instrumental in saving this woman from a sure suicide is delusional.
Just reread my last post. A couple of mistakes (no, not all us “moonbats” are perfect). I asked “what does that mean?” and shoule have written “what does that prove?” And (horrors!) I typed “expectations” rather than the correct “exceptions”.
Methinks Bob is a bit of a fantasist. It’s a small world, but not THAT small(“I know the EMT”-HA!). The slavish devotion to the Yuppie Carr by the likes of Bob and Vernon reminds me of the most fervent Obamamaniacs and their dedication to that false Messiah.
Here’s the problem I have with it – big whoop, he gave her 3 minutes of air time – then he cut her off! How about asking the producer to go to break, then patching her call in to the Samaritans or a mental health facility in Maine?
His response was inadequate, IMO.
